GECHS Campus Spotlight: Mr. Victor Canales is a new teacher who graduated from TAMIU in 2021. He completed his high school education at Lyndon B. Johnson High School in 2016. Mr. Canales teaches Math and is also a coach for UIL Calculator Applications and Number Sense at GECHS. He loves teaching at GECHS and finds it very satisfying to educate the students. Mr. Canales says that “even though it's his first year as a teacher, his colleagues have been very accommodating and supportive of him in this new environment.” #PhoenixPride

LISD campuses will be closed from Monday, December 18, 2023 through Monday, January 8, 2024 in observance of the Christmas Holidays.
All LISD campuses will resume their regular schedules on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Employees will return for Staff Development on Monday, January 8, 2024.

The Student of the Month Program is designed to recognize worthy students for their exemplary academic efforts, community service, citizenship, athletics, or volunteer service. The student should demonstrate average academic effort, good school attendance and good discipline. The nominated student should also demonstrate one of the four Leading the Way categories; Leading with Heart, Inspiring Change, Supports Growth, and Drive Results.

Don you know Mrs. Sara Villanueva?
GECHS Campus Spotlight: Sara Villanueva has worked as an ELAR teacher with LISD for 17 years and is currently the English 1301/1302 dual enrollment support teacher, where she works closely with TAMIU adjuncts. She earned her M.S. in Special Education with a concentration in Reading in December 2020 from Texas A&M International University. Mrs. Villanueva is in the 3rd year of her doctoral studies in curriculum and instruction, focusing on language, diversity, and literacy studies at Texas Tech University. She attributes her accomplishments at work and in her studies to the loving support she has from her husband of 16 years, her son, and her daughter. #PhoenixPride

Do you know Maria Sepulveda?
GECHS Campus Spotlight: Mrs. Maria Sepulveda is a custodian at GECHS. She has been working with LISD for 25 years. Mrs. Sepulveda worked her first three years as a part-time cafeteria staff at Kawas Elem. before becoming a custodian. She has worked at GECHS for most of her 25 years. Mrs. Sepulveda says that being a custodian can be a lot of work, but keeping a clean and safe environment for all students, faculty, and staff is satisfying. Being a custodian also helps her stay active and interact with everyone. #PhoenixPride

GECHS seniors attended an Early College Fair at Heights Elementary School. They shared their experiences taking dual enrollment courses at TAMIU with the elementary students. Our students provided them with insight into their college majors and future careers. This was a great opportunity to show the elementary students how to start their journey toward educational success. #PhoenixPride
